This is the Lady in the Black Hat by Scottish colourist paint Francis Cadell. I’m hoping very much to see her in the canvas at the National Galleries of Scotland’s forthcoming Cadell exhibition. I have always loved this image and gave it to my publisher when they asked for suggestions for the cover of my fourth novel, The Lark Ascending. I was thrilled when they came up with this:
